Lyrics:NCH 12: “I Sing the Mighty Power of God,” v. 2, 3. Text: Isaac Watts, 1715, altered; Tune: “Ellacombe,” 1784.
v. 2: I sing the goodness of our God that filled the earth with food; God formed the creatures with a word, and then pronounced them good. Oh, how your wonders are displayed, where’er I turn my eye: If I survey the ground I tread, or gaze upon the sky!
v. 3: On earth there’s not a plant or flower but makes your glory known. The clouds arise and spread their showers by order from your throne. All life is but a gift from you and ever in your care; wherever people gather, you, O God, are present there.
NCH 404: “Give Up Your Anxious Pains,” Text: Paul Gerhardt, 1656, Trans. Madeleine Forell Marshall, 1994; Tune: “Ich Halte Treulich Still,” attrib J.S. Bach, 1736.
v. 1: Give up your anxious pains, confusion, and remorse, to God who set and still maintains creation’s complex course. God leads what may appear chaotic, random, wild: So God has planned and will make clear a path for you, dear child.
v. 2: All things conform to please the faithful when they pray, so fall upon your trusting knees and all together say: “O faithful God of grace who rules the raging storm, enlighten our poor mortal race; your promised works perform.”
v. 3: “Don’t let us be dismayed by grievous social wrong; responsive, active, unafraid, may we be brave and strong. Extend your loving care through all our livelong days; and when we die bring us to where bright angels sing your praise.”
NCH 423: “Great is Your Faithfulness,” Text: Thomas O. Chisholm, 1923, altered; Tune: “Faithfulness,” William M. Runyan, 1923.
v. 1: Great is your faithfulness, O God, Creator, with you no shadow of turning we see. You do not change, your compassions they fail not; all of your goodness forever will be. Refrain: Great is your faithfulness! Great is your faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed your hand has provided, great is your faithfulness, God unto me!
v. 2: Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest, sun, moon, and stars in their courses above, join with all nature in manifold witness to your great faithfulness, mercy, and love. Refrain
v. 3: Pardon for sin and a peace so enduring, your own dear presence to cheer and to guide. Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow, blessings all mine with ten thousand beside. Refrain
